Using BOINC Manager 5.2.7
Windows XP -
Dual core Opteron
Member Seti@home

Hi,

I just tried attaching to the Rosetta Project but when I attempt to sign in using an "existing account" using my BOINC email & Cross Project ID it says account not found. I re-entered my email and copied & pasted my CPID again with the same results.

After several repetitive attempts using my CPID I thought perhaps I needed to create a new account and used my CPID as the password. This time it did go through but it appears this attachment is not linked with my old CPID and it had generated a new CPID.

I wish to divide my computer time between several projects and see my combined statistics for each project. It seems that my CPID should be continuous throughout my BOINC projects

I deleted the new account from BOINC manager and am asking here what I need to do to sign in with my existing CPID.

Thank you

Gary

Edit: FWIW; I do have a password set up with BOINC (set it up a week ago) and I tried using that as well but the email/password were not accepted.

This is not a firewall issue, BOINC Manager is churning out seti projects at two/hour and there is no problem sending/receiving with Manager.

Go to your acct and refresh your pass word. The CPID is only used by the system, to ID you on other projects so the stats can be listed under your name.....

Hello Jim,

I have a dilemma, I'm not sure which account to go to & perhaps how to get there. Until today, the only distributed anything was Seti@home and I had my account there but since it's switching to BOINC, BOiNC gave me a CPID which I first saw on my Seti page. Somewhere in all the BOINC related web pages I've been through in the last few days I assigned a password different than the CPID. It might be on the Seti message board, I will have to check.

Trying to sign into Rosetta failed that password and CPID but using my CPID in boinc manager while attaching to Rosetta as a new account in turn gave me a different CPID for Rosetta. I did not want two CPIDs so I detached Rosetta from Manager and it is no longer showing in my system and I have no idea what that new CPID was as I didn't write it down.

BOINC is certainly not user friendly for the casual person who wants to help the research. Ask me to decompress a fracture and I can do that easily but ask me to navigate these hallways of BOINC and it's another story. I'm sure many learned people spent many hours in discussions trying to get it right but I suspect not enough input was used from non-scientists in developing the interface. Perhaps there is a L/P option on the main page to get to one's BOINK account but if so, I missed it.

So can you suggest what website I need to sign into, to "refresh" my password? I would think once a password, always a password until I change it.

Thanks,

Gary

Each project's board (and the 'BOINC' boards) are all separate. If you use the same email address and password on all of them, it's not a problem. The Account Key you are sent in the "joinup" email is _replaced_ by this password, once you set it. You then no longer need the Account Key.

Confusion here... you will get a different CPID for each project. AFTER A FEW WUs on each project, these will automatically "sync" to all be the same, random which will be used - and then _that_ is the one you can use on the sigs sites, etc. if they still use that. Project IDs are normally used. There's no need to remember or write down any of the CPIDs.

BOINC is certainly not user friendly for the casual person who wants to help the research. Ask me to decompress a fracture and I can do that easily but ask me to navigate these hallways of BOINC and it's another story. I won't argue with you. It's over complicated and under-documented. All of us are just volunteers, with no control... I'll tell you Rosetta is, in my opinion, the "best" of the bunch.

So can you suggest what website I need to sign into, to "refresh" my password? I would think once a password, always a password until I change it.

You probably need to go to every website you need - SETI, Rosetta, BOINC - and "change password" to something you'll remember. If you can't get logged in, find the original email and use the "account key" from there, or hit "forgot password". Once they're set, they won't change on you.

Hello Jim,

Well I got Rosetta reset and it's running now. Thanks for your replies.

To my way of thinking a CPID would be a unique identifier; regardless of which project a participant attaches to, a cross platform identifier would work across all platforms. Looking at the CPID's I now have received three...

I understand politics, I have to deal with it daily but it sure makes for un-necessary difficulties. It's a good device to asuage egos.

So as to Rosetta, Seti & whatever else I might choose, is there a way to govern the ratio of which one gets which % of CPU time or does it get divided up equally? I saw there is a seti@home general preferences page which allows me to make such changes as Do work while computer is running on batteries, Do work while computer is in use, Write to disk at most every 60 seconds ... and so on. It looks like it would be a BOINC page but the website is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global&updated=1
Is there indeed a web page that is BOINC only where changes are made or do I need to do everything from the Seti account?

Lastly for the moment, when using the manager & in the projects tab; when I highlight Seti there is a slew of web sites to automatically go to including Seti@ Home, message boards, help, your account, your preferences & several other helpful sites. When I highlight Rosetta the only web page that shows is the Rosetta@home web page & no other buttons show.

Heh, BONC should have asked my input before implementing their software/user interface :/

Thank you for your time and assistance,

Gary

Go to accts page and click on "Rosetta@home
control resource share and customize graphics View or edit Rosetta@home preferences" and you will see the resource share at the top.....

Use that to change the % of cpu time that a projects gets, I and using 50, 100, and 200 for two of my computers. One computer has 6 projects and this setting translates into 15.38% for 4 projects (100), 7.69% for one project (50) and 30.77% for the last project (200).
The other has 3 projects and it is 28.57%, 14.29%, 57.14%.

I am using two 840ee 3.2 W ht 3 gig of mem and they handle all projects in a timely manner, one thing I have found is that you need to keep the connect to time low, I use 1.

If you signup with a project, using the same name and email, after a bit of time the CPID will change to one number, I am not sure how it works but I know I have had a number of CPIDs over the last 1 and a half.

Every time BOINC contacts one of the projects, it compares your email address and the CPID (which is a hash of your email address), if the emails match, BOINC and the project scheduler determine which CPID is OLDER (usually means is a lower number), and then tells both project and your BOINC to use the lower CPID.

Therefore after several connects the CPID for all of your projects should line up.

HOWEVER in order for this to work, there has to be a "path" between all of your projects. For example, if you have 3 dedicated crunchers, each running only 1 project, your CPID will never converge... because then there's no way for the CPID to propagate through all the computers. So, as long as you have one computer that is attached to all of your projects your CPID will become constant, and you will be able to get your stats.

Jim, Bill & eberndl,

Things seem to be on pace. It appears that each project is set up quite differently in the BOINC manager and the way of dealing with settings via the manager is quite different.

Your assistance made all the difference.

Thank you for your prompt and helpful replies.

I don't have my password and my old e mail address is from an account that I no longer have. I managed to have the ID mailed to that address, but I can't access it. I can not ask a question on Boinc without signing in. I can't sign in, because I don't have a password or ID. I am going around in circles. I am up to 2,100 points and don't want to lose them by signing up again and starting all over.
