My Laptop has stared playing up, it's been spitting out Client Error / Compute Error for a few days now.

I've upgraded from BOINC 6.2 to 6.4.5, detaching and re-ataching but it's still doing it. I'm also getting graphics corruption when I maxamise the BOINC window
full screen, either odd coloured pixles or parts of the desktop showing through.

Is the conscensus I need to reinstall my XP Pro OS?

Edit: It is set to max 80% cpu, and it suspends when I'm using it.

it could just be a bad batch of tasks.
wait for your other work to complete and see what happens before doing anything drastic.

be sure to check that in boinc manager on the advanced -> preferences -> disk and memory usage tab, that you have checked the box related to leaving tasks in memory.

Rich, in order to maximize the amount of CPU going in to doing the actual work, sometimes the graphics thread gets starved for CPU and you have to leave it up for about 30 seconds before it fully refreshes it's window space and really kicks in.

Are you leaving the graphic open long enough for it to get up and running?

Yes, and when you are suspending while machine is in use, always be sure to "leave applications in memory while suspended".

...and if you are opening the graphic display then isn't your computer "in use"? Are you referring to the graphic window? Or the screensaver? Because the graphics window only has something to show when the task is active, and the screensaver only runs when your machine is otherwise idle. If you are not running tasks while the machine is in use, then you may not have either case.

Thanks for the responses!

The graphic / screen saver is off on all my machines. When I say window I'm referring to the 'Advanced View' window, to check BOINC messages and tasks etc.

Will check the 'leave tasks in memory' option.

I also get two red messages - something about 2 results max daily quota reached, and then the next communication is deferred for 9+ hours.
I'll try and post the messages later, I don't have the system in front of me at the moment.

Cheers

Wow, you have a lot of hosts!

Looks like this one is limited on tasks it can download right now. It apparently ran through a pile of tasks and got errors. You then apparently detached and attached again and that probably cleared up the problem. When you return successfully results, then you are allowed to download more. You just won't be able to build up a cache of tasks until 24hrs elapse and you are again allowed to download up to 100 tasks per CPU each day.

2 Completed successfully, 2 running, 4 ready to start.
Looks the it may have cleared up whatever the problem was.

I'm still getting some screen corruption. I'll try reloading the graphics software, the nVidia 1500m seems to throw an occasional hissy fit in the HP nw9440 laptop.

Computers! Hissy fits! Surely not!

The hosts are a mix of work / home machines & 4 old Xeon workstations that I'm not sure are worth the heat n power! (my power costs at the office are inclusive of power though so the old P4 Xeons may as well be doing something)

Yes, I'd refresh the graphics drivers too, but it might be worth your while working your way through the TweakGuides method of optimising your machine before and after installing them. A long process when you do it the first time, but some excellent advice in there and there'll be things you're bound to learn. Also the BlackViper guide to setting up Services are a good idea to plough through.

If problems persist, the thread on the kind of damage that excessive heat can cause may hint at another potential issue. I have a couple of machines (one desktop, one laptop) showing signs of problems in that area. Good luck.

I was a bit reticent about the Tweaking Companion initially, but it's very comprehensive and, you're right, it did fill in gaps I hadn't thought about, so the suggestions for settings and options to keep on or switch off were appreciated.

Very good indeed, thanks.

Natch.

Just passing on advice I've checked out and found to be good and comprehensible to both beginner and even experienced users to some extent.

Still not been through it completely for my Vista machines yet.
