Received a couple of these:- rosetta@home 11/11/2008 6:00:06 AM Message from server: No work sent rosetta@home 11/11/2008 6:00:06 AM Message from server: Your computer has 255 MB of memory, and 488 MB is needed Listed requirement is 256MB. (I assume per core) This is a 1 core machine. Do some of the new units need more mem than normal? Note: Am still getting some new work. Bruce |

Yes, WUs belonging to this project may require up to 300-400Mbytes of physical memory per core, and I've been getting mostly these kinds of WUs lately. Normal (or at least different kind of) WUs still usually use about 100-200Mbytes of PM at most. |

There are tasks with various memory requirements. The 256MB is a minimum for any of them. For machines that have more memory, they can run a wider variety of tasks sent out by the project. When you get this message, it is basically an indication that the present list of work to be sent out (the "short list" that the scheduler uses) does not have any tasks for the lower memory machines. There could be other tasks created that will run in the 256MB, and they will later churn in to the "short list", and be assigned to you. This is why you are seeing the message sometimes, and yet still getting work as well. So, 256MB is still the minimum requirement, but the current tasks to be done are overweighted with tasks with higher memory requirements. The mix of work changes over time as analysis of different techiniques is done. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
