Message 50050 - Posted: 26 Dec 2007, 2:57:46 UTC

I have been thinking about upgrading one of my systems to a Phenom 9600. I have not seen any results on the 9600 yet to see how it does as a cruncher. I have seen some results from 9500's on SETI and some seem to be doing well. Anyone know how a stock 9600 compares to a q6600? I have a q6600 now and I realize that the 9600 is not as fast as the Q in most of the benchmarks and does suffer from the errata problem. I am still intriqued by the CPU and would like to give it a shot.

I can not answer this question but would encourage you to stay with the Q6600. If you are looking for a project, over-clock the Q6600. They are great over-clockers and I have mine running at 3.4GHz. It is almost like adding another core.
Thx!

I am not getting rid of my Q6600. I am looking to upgrade one of my X2 systems. I have thought about getting a second Q6600 but it would cost more than what I am willing to spend at this point. I have overclocked the Q6600 a bit. The board it is running in (ASUS P5b-VM) really doesn't give me a whole lot of OC'ing options. It has been running stable at 2.7. I wish I can get it up to 3.4.

Sorry to ask the obvious, but can you just put a Phenom into an AM2 socketed mobo? i.e., a pre-built Compaq? Aren't there issues of chipsets and bioses to go from X2 to X4, or is it literally as simple as swapping out the cpu's ?

It depends on the board. Some companies are not offering bios updates for the Phenom some are. If it is from Compaq I doubt they offer the support.

I haven't heard of any chipset issues, but I think you do need a Phenom aware BIOS to initialize the CPU correctly. Some motherboard makers may not bother coming out with a new BIOS for their older AM2 boards.

Check Tom's Hardware......Phenom only worked on two of nine mobos tested.

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to buy a new board anyway. The system I am thinking about replacing has a cheap ECS board. So now I have to decide if I want to go with the AMD 790 chipset or the NVIDIA chipsets. Either way I think I am going to wait until I can get my hands on the Black edition or for the new stepping that is supposed to be released sometime after the first of the year.

Yeah, The Inquirer also refers to Tom's in There's no upgrade path to Phenom:

"Adding insult to injury, it seems one of the greatest promises on the Phenom processor won’t be kept (ie: drop-in, upgrade compatibility). It seems AMD’s in bigger trouble than most expected (or wished)."

Well after doing some research I decided to hold off on the Phenom for now. I decided to try out a Athlon X2 5000+ Black edition. All I can say is WOW! This thing easily overclocks to 3Ghz on stock voltage and the temps are still sitting at 40 degrees C. Plus it is running super stable. Not a bad drop in for a 4600 that it replaced.

Well the system ran great for about a week and then the power supply died. I chaulk this up to a coincidence. Ordered a new PS with 3 day shipping so hopefully soon I can get that system back to crunching. At least now I have my new Core 2 Duo laptop to help fill the gap :).

Any addition of crunching power for such a great scientific project is very welcome. Thanks!

I'm trying a Phenom 9500 (2.2GHz) with Rosetta:
https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=723851

It seems to be getting arount 1550/day at the moment.

Note that all timings are stock, and I'm using cheap DDR2-667 memory and an inexpensive am2 motherboard (an Asrock ALiveNF6G-VSTA with BIOS 2.1, which doesn't disable the TLB).

This is a netboot node running Linux.

I tried undervolting, but the 9500 became unstable below 1.15V (stock is 1.25V) I'm currently using 1.20V. With a Seasonic 300W "80 plus" power supply it uses 107W from the wall when running 4 Rosettas.

I had a P4 541 running for years on a PSU. Then I upgraded to a Q6600 (requires the same power) and blew the PSU in about 4 days. No big deal, I bought a 680W PSU and started running again.

Weired that you had a similar issue with your PSU.

Thx!

Well I finally got a Phenom. I picked up a 9850 BE and it has been running for a bit over 24 hour now. I don't have enough results to base a opinion yet. One thing that I am disappointed in is I have a NVidia chipset board and the AMD overdrive only works with a 7xx chipset. Oh well. I guess I will have to get a new MB :). I can put an old 4600 in the NVidia board and have even more crunchers working.

Great! Let us know how it is doing once the RAC has stabilized, and if you try any overclocking.
