i have a athlon 2800+ with 512mb ram, i see i can take a semperon 3400 in my current mobo. i gain 200 mhz in speed but lose half the l2 cache size. would i gain lose or break even if i got this processor? or should i just up my memory by a few modules and stick with this current processor? anything in the new athlon 64x2 series would require me to get a whole new system and software from the looks of it. comments anyone? |

I have run similar computers in the past... For Rosie, cache is king, and physical memory (to avoid accessing the swap file) is a close second. If you only stand to gain 200MHz of processor speed, but loose half the L2 cache, I would say: Stick with the Athlon 2800+ ...just my opinion :D Cheers Rosie, Rosie, she's our gal, If she can't do it, no one shall! |

i have a athlon 2800+ with 512mb ram, i see i can take a semperon 3400 in my current mobo. I would forget the cpu and buy memory. 1gig ddr memory is only $50 new and 1gig drr2 memory is maybe $80. To bad I just gave a bunch away last Friday. ps You can get new PCs cheap too. Dell Inspiron 530 with intel Duo Processor E6550 (4MB L2 Cache,2.33GHz,1333 FSB) $610 with out monitor. The same system with AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800 Processor is $400 and the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 5000 Processor is $550. Jmarks |

Probably not good for Belgium, but... maybe your family state-side could purchase, and eBay'ing the monitor would cover the shipping costs From Slickdeals: Dell SB has Vostro 200 Desktop with 19" LCD and a choice of Windows XP Home or Windows Vista Home Basic for $389 with free shipping. AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+ - thats socket 754 I guess? There are AMD 64 3700+ out for that socket, also with 1024 km L2 cache, dont know if you are using eBay, but I found them there: 3700+@eBay http://www.MIAteam.eu |

A new MBO plus dual core AMD 6000+ with a GB of DDR2 RAM shouldn't cost more than $350. That'd whip along :) |

i have a athlon 2800+ with 512mb ram, i see i can take a semperon 3400 in my current mobo. just make sure you have a dual voltage power supply and yeah energy, i was attempting to compute my usage and wondered if my math was correct. if it is this is a expensive thing to maintain. |

bah...80 euros and rising plus an additional 20 for shipping. forget it No, its a used CPU... price is pretty high compared to new AMD CPUs, but there are still people out there paying such prices for these CPUs, that you cant get anymore in shops. F.e. my sockel A Athlon 3200+ / Barton Core is around 90 € used @ eBay - back in 2004 I payed 125 € NEW !! Insane, I should just sell it now ;) Also I was looking for a dual core for socket 939 , like 4400+ or 4600+, but they reach around 200 € on eBay - also used - I mean im not crazy, for 200 € I could get already a AM2 6000+ and a cheap mainboard ! Back to topic: I wouldnt replace the 2800+ with the 3400+ sempron, you will probably lose computing speed there. If your mainboard allows it, overclock it. http://www.MIAteam.eu |

bah...80 euros and rising plus an additional 20 for shipping. forget it tried overclocking once and the system locked up. never tried it again. on this dual channel memory, whats the difference between that and single channel memory? can a stick of dual channel work alongside a stick of single channel? and this dual channel memory is capable of working with my existing mobo? i just might go this route for awhile and then look into another cpu for this mobo after christmas. |

on this dual channel memory, whats the difference between that and single channel memory? can a stick of dual channel work alongside a stick of single channel? and this dual channel memory is capable of working with my existing mobo? Dual Channel means the motherboard can read/write to two sticks of DDR memory at the same time, because there are two channels. The memory used isn't any different, you just need to put two similar sticks in to enable dual channel. Most chipsets require that the sticks are the same size, but i think there's at least one chipset out there that can make use of different sized sticks. |
