Hi !!

I wonder why Rosetta only runs at 1000 Mhz instead of the default 2000 Mhz with my CPU.Usally a workunit takes about 3 hours with the CPU running at 2000 Mhz it takes the same time when the CPU works at 1000 Mhz.
I have tried to change the Cool´n´Quite setting but there is no difference.Im using Windows 2000 SP4 with 2GB RAM.
Does anybody know why this is so...?
Any response would be gratefull...

Regards

Diddy, if your running at 1/2 freq there are three things that can do that.

1) you intentionally underclocked your processor in the bios (probably not this one)

2) Cool'n'quiet is enabled in the bios and working when it shouldn't be

3) The "On die" thermal diode on the cpu has detected an overheating condition and is automatically limiting the freq.

Not sure what else would do it.

Hi !!

Nope...when I run the CPU at 2000Mhz the voltage is 1.42.Also checked that
the CPU is really running at 2000Mhz (AMD program)

2) Cool'n'quiet is enabled in the bios and working when it shouldn't be

Could be that...I´ll have to check that one out...

3) The "On die" thermal diode on the cpu has detected an overheating condition and is automatically limiting the freq.

When the CPU is running "full speed" the temp is never more than 43 degreese celsius.

Not sure what else would do it.

I will try your tips...thanks.

After rereading your opening statement, I'm not sure I know what your problem really is. I do have this to add :

Rosetta is the only boinc project where you can pick your "desired" run time. Default is 3 hours. Meaning, it will do as much as it can in those three hours. If you limit the freq, then it'll only be able to do that much less, but will still end near the requested 3 hour mark. There are additional conditions to this setting which may affect your "actual" run time.

What is showing you that Rosetta only runs at 1/2 speed?

yeah - rosetta will work to the run time no matter what speed your CPU runs at. The number of decoys it processes within that task (and therefore the number of credits assigned) will increase as CPU speed increases though.

I believe Cool & Quiet throttles down the CPU if it's only running something at low priority so I'd guess it's that.

Were do I change the 3 hour setting...I have BIONIC set on "allways run"...

I have timed it...running in 1000Mhz and 2000Mhz...it takes the same time but as you wrote it could be the 3 hour setting but I cant find were I can change that...

According to AMD the CPU adjusts the Mhz according to what program needs...when I run games it runs at 2000Mhz with Cool & Quiet. Can see that in the program SpeedFan that the temp rises to about 43C instead of about 34C when it runs at 1000Mhz and the voltage changes from 1.12V to 1.42V...

you can change the rosetta run time under the rosetta@home preferences menu if you click 'preferences' above. However, I don't think this is what you're after - it doesn't change how fast your machine processes rosetta, it just changes how long it will run for before reporting the results. You can set it to 3hrs or 24hrs but you'll still do the same amount of work per hour.

your games will run at normal priority whereas rosetta runs at low priority. Because rosetta is low priority, cool and quiet might well be reducing the clock speed when just rosetta is running.

I found it and changed it to 1 hour...

Must be that but I have the CPU priority to 100% since the beginning.I
disabled Cool & Quiet in Windows and I can allready see that the workunit will be done in about half the time than before...

Thanks for your tips...

Hi, I have cool and quiet on my Athlon 3000+ and it runs at 2000MHz when on rosetta, so maybe you need to update your driver.
