I just bought a new HP system, DUO core processor. I've noticed that I have two work units processing at the same time. This is great. The same thing my Dell does. Difference is, on the HP, one work unit will process for several seconds while the other one is stopped. Then they'll switch and the one that was stopped will process for several seconds. My Dell processes both units at the same time. Any ideas? Is this maybe a limitation of my new system, or maybe just the way the system is handling the particular jobs it is processing? Thanks for any info. |

Your new machine reports in with 2 CPUs. And you've got two tasks running, so it sounds like BOINC is configured to use both, so that's good. I'm wondering if perhaps your are having the high memory issues that others reported over the weekend. Do your tasks have the words "FOLD_AND_DOCK_SUBSYSTEM" in the name? (see more info) Open up the BOINC Manager, go to the advanced view, and then the tasks tab. What is shown for the extreme right column for "status" of the two tasks? Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

No, the task names are "1gidA_BOINC_MG_CHAINBREAKS_........" (to keep it short). The status of both tasks is 'running' They have each taken almost 4 hours of CPU time so far and are at about 95% completion. |

Go to the [Participants] link at the top of this message board display, click on your General Preferences. Do you have more then one "location" set up? What are your preferences for the "use at most % of CPU"? [edit] Are you looking at the task manager to see when things are running? Is some other Windows task kicking in and using CPU? Or does the CPU time just go to the idel thread when both task are not running? Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

You have better machines than me, but 1gidA WU's take a long time to process. I get 2 decoys in 6 hours run time and each decoy/model has over 40k steps in it from searching to refining. What is your run time for WU's? 6hrs or 8hrs or _hrs? No, the task names are "1gidA_BOINC_MG_CHAINBREAKS_........" (to keep it short). The status of both tasks is 'running' They have each taken almost 4 hours of CPU time so far and are at about 95% completion. |

What are your preferences for the "use at most % of CPU"? Here's how I have my preferences set up. I just added this new computer and beside doing that, I didn't change any preferences from what I had set up for my other systems. The only other programs I have running are the usual anti-virus, firewall and spyware items. It just seems odd that only one processor at a time is accumulating CPU time. Do work while computer is running on batteries? (matters only for portable computers) no Do work while computer is in use? yes Do work only between the hours of (no restriction) Leave applications in memory while suspended? (suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no Switch between applications every (recommended: 60 minutes) 60 minutes On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors Use at most Enforced by version 5.6 and greater 100 percent of CPU time Disk and memory usage Use at most 100 GB disk space Leave at least (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.1 GB disk space free Use at most 50% of total disk space Write to disk at most every 60 seconds Use at most 75% of page file (swap space) Use at most Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 50% of memory when computer is in use Use at most Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 100% of memory when computer is idle Network usage Connect to network about every (determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days) 10 days Confirm before connecting to Internet? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Disconnect when done? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Maximum download rate: no limit Maximum upload rate: no limit Use network only between the hours of Enforced by versions 4.46 and greater (no restriction) Skip image file verification? Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example). Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no |

i can't help with the on/off problem, although I thought there was a download from AMD to fix some problem like this. I have a vague recolection of that... I do know that this: Leave applications in memory while suspended? (suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no is recommended to be set to yes. That way, although it will consume swap file space (which isn't generally a problem as there's usually plenty of it), it will stop you losing all work since the last checkpoint when BOINC switches between projects. (There might be other times this is used too, like when BOINC pauses due to insuficcient memory being available) HTH Danny |

Well whatever it was, it seems to have resolved itself. Both work units seem to be processing at the same time now. I can only guess, since I don't know much at all about how computers handle these work units, that it was the work units themselves and how they were designed to be processed by the computer. Thanks for you assistance, and to all that responded, thank you too. |

Each decoy/model has over 40k steps in it from searching to refining. Is there away 2 tell between when a wu s searching and when it's refining? |

Often, the graphic will show only the "backbone" during "searching". And during the full atom relax it will show all of the sidechains. So the graphic will look a lot busier during the last stage. Having said that, the tasks all function differently, so that's not always true. The other way is simply to note the time per step. The relax steps take a lot longer because energy levels for more details are calculated. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
