Perhaps I can explain the problem with Dr. David Baker's analogy, you are a “searcher” searching for the lowest point on a very large planet, if you have found a valley that is leading down, you do just that, you keep going down, and maybe look over the next hill or two to see if it's even lower than you are now. When you have located the lowest position that you can find, you check your watch and do one of two things: Are you in the correct thread? I have re-read this post and it may sound like I am being aggressive, especially because this thread has a bit of heat to it. I honestly do not mean this post to be offensive in any way shape or form. G'day Angus Yes, I believe I am in the correct thread. I was attempting to explain why BOINC can sometimes jump from 1% to 100% in seconds, after many hours of Rosetta@Home work. If I am being confusing, please let me know how I can change what I said so that it is understandable. If it is totally incomprehensible, please tell me that too. Thanks Hugo. Edit: a few edits to make it a little more readable |

Hugo, I think all the players here are now clear on WHY the % complete works the way it does, and that it only updates after a completed model, and that beyond that it tries to live within your time preference. The topic of this thread is that this behavior, especially showing the estimated runtime going UP during the crunching of the entire model, especially the first one, is confusing; and could be improved. And so now, after the noted "heat", the topic has evolved in to "how should the display look to be more intuitive to new users?" If I'd been on last night I might have deleted some of these posts. Please stop the name calling. We're all working towards the same goal. It would be a shame to see part of your contribution to that goal deleted because you can't refrain from offending one another. Feel free to delete (hide) messages 38121, 38112, 38108, and as many of Matt Davis' trolling posts as you care to. Then ditch this one when you're done. All right, I'm a new user and have in fact read several threads regarding the 1% issue. Thus, am I right to assume the following? Even if a process has been at 1% stage for some time, as long as the figures keep moving in the "Graphic interface", everything is fine and normal? Thank you! :) Lucifiel |

That's correct, Lucifiel. :) And if the WU doesn't make any progress for long enough, the Watchdog process will terminate it for you. |

All right, thank you! Edited: Oops, should've paid more attention to the "Newbie Q&A" |

ATTN! Mods !! Wake up - you got work to do here. (Never can find a mod when you need one..) ATTN! Mods !! If you feel an issue warrants moderator attention, there is a thread for you to report and discuss that. I've already posted regarding those posts, and decided that a warning should suffice. To do the deletion job properly, at this point, would be disruptive to the conversation. I devote A LOT of time to this project, and take some degree of offense to your implication that moderators are not at work on the boards, and also that you "need one". You should not rely on others to take back your words for you. I also take some offense to posts such as those you are referencing, which make the project's community less friendly, and more adversarial. Even jovial ribbing, joking and sarcasm are easily misunderstood by many readers. The Project Team and the moderators are VERY responsive to the Rosetta community of users. Many of your posts in the last week seem to imply otherwise. I am glad to see you back with a Rosetta RAC. But I must tell you, I doubt that I've deleted more then 5 posts since you left, and in the past week, you've got about that many just by yourself that one could reasonably argue justify Moderator action. Please view the posts you make as being a permanent project resource. And consider that point carefully before you click the "Post reply" button. I say that not as a promise not to delete, but as a guideline for the mindset that would not require it. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

Mod.Sense : You're the one who was complaining, so I offered to have my "off-topic" responses to the troll deleted. No skin off my nose if you want to leave them. Bzag00, if you or others didn't notice it, according to Rhiju's post here, Rosetta v5.55 will show a better estimate of percentage of work done. Soon, the 1.xx% until the first decoy is finished will join the Rosetta option where it would run a set number (10?) of decoys and then call home for more work. I.e. be used in the "I remember when" type threads. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Tymbrimi ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |
