Hi! I am a newcomer at this thread and I take a bold step to ask people a few questions... Background: I am a normal guy, with no diseases or dysfunctions whatsoever, but; my girlfriend is most likely suffering MS-disease, not diagnosed yet. I was just wondering: 1. If MS is a autoimmune disease, would your research help developing a cure or at least a medicine that can seize the destruction of myelin? 2. Can this research help recover lost nerve-connections, wich has been lost because of this disease? A loving man, ready to do anything for his loved one, Anton |

One of the things that led me here was the fact that the improvements we're making to the Rosetta code (or helping to make by testing it out) will enable others to come along and setup DC projects for those diseases that aren't represented in the Boinc community. Recently, projects that various Rosetta team members have been working on progressed to the point where we're starting to do medical research, not just working on improving the Rosetta code. I don't remember the statements that came up on previous MS requests - but devoting cpu time here while waiting for a dedicated MS Boinc project makes sense to me, if Rosetta doesn't have MS researches onboard. |

I don't remember the statements that came up on previous MS requests I found this statement at Wikipedia : With regard to the message board posts, we aren't yet doing any work on diabetes or Multiple Sclerosis specifically, but if we can generate accurate structures of proteins involved in these diseases using the methods you are helping us to develop, it will contribute to efforts to develop therapies. The way I understand it, we're not working on MS specifically (I wish we were, by the way), but if Rosetta@Home is successful, the fight against disease in general will be revolutionised. I don't remember the statements that came up on previous MS requests Yes. If we (as humankind) will develop a fast way that let us reliably predict shape of protein from sequence, it will let us design medicines/cures in a new more powerful way. Almost every peace of our body or blood or immune system - is a pure mix of proteins. Being able to design billions of artificial one we make sky is our limit. Real cures that have no side effects. Ability to grow arm instead of lost one. Cure for aging. It is very long way to go - but what Baker group doing for AIDS - few years ago was science fiction. Anyway, it still looks like effective(sic!!!) computational design of proteins is dozens years away from now, and AIDS vaccine designed - more like first step, aimed to give a try to still immature technology, rather then something truly effective. I've found another BOINC project working on neurological conditions (but not MS, apparantly). Requires a rather high-end graphics card and runs as GPU workunits, so it shouldn't interfere with any workunits for Rosetta@Home unless you devote one CPU core to keeping its GPU running as fast as possible. GPUGRID http://www.gpugrid.net/ They accept donations, and have promised to add a new type of research for whoever has donated the most when they reach 50,000 euros total. |

I don't remember the statements that came up on previous MS requests I'll be a very happy man when we reach this day! |
