I don't think this affects people who are running boinc as a service so you could try that if possible as the service is independant of Boinc manager.

You could also try updating to 5.8.5, or as a temporary workaround you could just run boinc.exe from the boinc folder and then move the command window off the screen to the bottom right so there's just the corner of the window showing. It'll be hidden behind any other active windows, and you can't accidentally click the x to close it as that'll be off the screen.

Hi dcdc, 5.8.5 appears to be truly a test version released specifically for testing "a crashing bug". Here's what Rom said when he released it to us Alpha Testers:

[boinc_alpha] BOINC 5.8.5 released for Windows
Rom Walton to boinc_alpha, Charlie, Kevin, Walt
show details Jan 24 (1 day ago)

Howdy Folks,

Per David's instructions this release was built straight out of
the HEAD branch for the purposes of tracking down what was formally a
crashing bug, but is now just improper behavior in the CC.

Please create a cc_config.xml file with the following settings:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<task_debug>1</task_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

The message we are looking for is:
2007-01-23 21:08:03 [---] garbage_collect(); still have active
task for acked result; state 0

When you see it could you stop BOINC and zip up your state
files, log files, sched_request, and sched_reply files and email them to
us?

Log any bugs you find to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/.

Thanks in advance.

----- Rom

This is one of those versions I wouldn't recommend to others. Just inserting my 2c here, so users can be aware.

HTH

Here's a link to boinc_5.8.4_windows_intelx86.exe if he want's to try that. PS I am making the assumption you're a windows user.

I have the same problem.
I'm running version 5.4.11 in service mode.
But I have the manager almost always open for follow up.

Sometimes, I notice the manager lost his connection. No tasks are running then.
When I close the manager, and reopen him, it's ok again.

I thought in service mode, the manager (normally) isn't needed?
