Thanks BennyRop, that makes more sense. I don't know why the Mac didn't report results for 5 days. It was connected to the internet and did not show any errors in the message window, and it was running the BOINC client.

Was it working on another project maybe? Perhaps (being a fairly new computer on the other project as well, it downloaded more work than it should, and had to crunch the other project first? If so, then in a week or so the client will have learnt to adjust the maounts of work it asks for from each project.

If Rosetta is your only project then please ignore the above

I think there's a need for returning to the earlier structure of this thread, i.e Question:... Answer:...
It was a very readable thread, very useful one. If this becomes a thread like the others, the original "mission" (to build a good supplement to the FAQs) gets lost :)

yes and no. Yes the thread is getting cluttered, no I would not like to stop the discussion most of which seems on topic for the improvement of this thread (asking new q's, clarifying previous answers).

The discussion is needed in order to tease out where the FAQ (and/or earlier posts here) are unclear.

Suggestion A

One way this can be made to work is for the mods to move discussion points to a new discussion: resolved thread) after adding any new Q: A post that is needed (which may supersede an existing Q: A post)

Suggestion B

Another way it can be made to work is to make this thread a read-only (write by mods) thread and include a posting with a link to a "further questions" thread.

Of these two, I prefer suggestion A - it makes it easy for someone to ask a q related to an existing post using the "reply" feature. This automatically includes a link back to the posting the user was asking about. This backlink continues to work even after the posting is later moved.

The problem with asking users to post in a separate thread is that you don't get those backlinks unless the user is quite advance.

The advantage of suggestion B is that the thread looks tidier for the absolute newcomer.

But D's basic point is correct. This thread would benefit from being tidier.

As you will notice in the future, my problem is that I can't express my thought as well as you can. In this particular case, my thoughts were exactly matching yours, but if i wrote (had written?) too many words, probably I would make (would have made?) too many mistakes :D
Not writing a sufficient number of words is a mistake too :D

I'm glad you are finding the thread and it's structure useful. The moderators have agreed to work with me to keep the thread clean. I will be attempting to summarize each question/topic and form a comprehensive answer to it, will post that and then we'll move the more detailed discussion to another "Q&A archieve" thread.

For now, please continue to use this thread to help people use Rosetta.

Daniele:

Nobody here will mind about how you use English, so long as we understand you.

I have noticed several of your posts in the last few days on several different threads. All of them were worth reading. Your ideas are clear to me -- a lot better than my thoughts would be in Italian!

Not writing a sufficient number of words is a mistake too :D

That would be the *big* mistake. Please keep posting.

Welcome KoDAk! I see you are from the Ukrain, so perhaps your English is not very good. It looks like you are wondering why you do not have work to crunch. From the messages you have copied here, it looks like your have told BOINC not to user your internet connection right now. It will need access to the internet to get more work.

Open BOINC Manager. Pull down the "Activity" menu, and select the option for "network activity always available". If BOINC doesn't connect right away and request more work, go to the Projects tab, select Rosetta and then click the update button on the left.

It appears one of your work units ran in to a problem and ended early, so this may be why you need more work sooner then expected.

Hi Greg,

On the front page there is a section titled "about" which has a lot of good information about the project in general. With respect to graphics there is a page titled Quick guide to Rosetta and its graphics which may be of some help to you.

BOINC and Rosetta have measures in place that will abort work units that aren't running properly. So, in general, unless you see some specific advice to the contrary, you should NOT abort work units (WUs).[/quote]

The problem is BOINC is not switching projects every 60 mins like it should and other projects are not getting done!

My ScreenSaver is set to NONE!

Ricky, that's normal. You see actually the setting in BOINC tells it how often to reconsider which work to be crunching. So, each hour, it looks at the deadlines and the relative debt between the projects and facters that in with how often you connect to the internet, how many days of work you keep on-hand and all the rest.

Bottom line, it is deciding to continue on the work it has started. This might be because these tasks are nearing a deadline, or that other projects had deadlines previously and incurred a time debt to Rosetta which is now being repaid.

Again, expect your respective resource shares to be enforced over the course of 100 hours, not 100 minutes.

Happy Rosetta Birthday by the way!! Guess I'm a day late now (two by GMT I suppose)

Message 32785 - Posted: 17 Dec 2006, 2:07:15 UTC - in response to Message 32773.

I've started this thread so when I have defined a new Q&A item that addresses concerns that people have posted to the Q&A thread, the posts with the original questions and discussion can be moved here.

This will keep the Q&A thread cleaner and make it easier to find things in it.

Unfortunately, I have no way to place this message on "top", messages are all in date order, so I made it big and blue.
