I have two computers that I just upgraded to AMD dual core processors.
One computer shows 2 cpu's on cpu test and is running two Rosetta workunits. The other one only shows 1 cpu and is only running one workunit.

How can I make the other computer show 2 cpu's and run Rosetta on both cores?

If you go to the Windows Task Manager, and click on the Performance tab... how many CPU charts are illustraited?? Bottom line, if Windows doesn't think you've got two CPUs, then BOINC won't either.

I don't know much about it, but I think you either need to change something in the setup options to enable hyperthreading, or you have to update the BIOS to support it.

I'm sure others will post better specifics for you.

Hi Clyde,

go to the device manager, open the "computer" in the list and it should read "ACPI multiprocessor PC" or similar. If it doesn't, click on the "drivers" tab and click "update driver" or similar (I've of course got the German version here, so I am not sure about exact labels). You can now choose between two HALs, one for singleprocessor and one for multiprocessor machines. Select the multiprocessor and click ok. Then you need to restart the PC.

Thanks for the information. I looked in Device Manager under processor and found the processor listed twice, so I thought it was ok.

Looking under the tools that were you both suggested I found that it appears that only one core is working. I did the driver update and the system said that it had the best driver available installed already. It did not do the HAL thing. I reinstalled the original processor, rebooted and then reinstalled the new dual core processor. No joy. Still using only one core.

Unless you can suggest anything else, guess I will try to call AMD Monday.

Switching Hals to get Windows 2k and XP to use the new cpu has been discussed on The Rebel's Haven Computer Forum - as well as many other tech forums. Sometimes, you're able to reinstall windows over itself, and it updates your HAL, sometimes you have to update the HAL yourself.

Win2k and WinXP deal with the issue differently; some of the options for Win2k didn't work at all on WinXP.

From looking at your computers the ones that should have 2 CPUs do have 2 listed in BOINC. Make sure your settings allow at least 2 CPUs to be used. Also BOINC will only use one CPU by default, so until the new install downloads your preferences it will only use one.

You may have hit the nail on the head. I will wait for the new preferences to take effect. I had to make another set of preferences in BAM for the new host since there are now two processors. I also told BOINC to synchronize with BAM.

The older machine, the P4 3.2, is hyperthreaded, but I've never been particular about it. I got away from it since I had some overheating problems early on, and when I did try to hyperthread, it seemed I was actually losing credit instead of the 5-10% gain I expected.
