I had an account here for almost 5 years, and I got notice from Boinc that I had an invalid or missing API key. So, I came to Rosetta@home and there was no account linked to my email.

There is a reason. We had a big problem with Spam accounts and the solution went wrong and had the effect you're describing - 8566 users were removed.
The problem was recognised a few days later and about 8000 accounts that held a credit against them were reinstated and this seemed to fix the problem, but it may be that a few slipped through the net.
