I can upload fine from my computer at home. But my work one can't--I'm assuming because of a firewall somewhere.

Any ideas on how to get this to work? Any manual uploads?

Hmmm. BOINC just basically runs the way a browser does. So the fact that you were able to connect and download the WUs SHOULD mean you can upload as well. It's all done over port 80, the same port your browser uses.

Let's test your fire wall theory. From your PC at work, in a browser, enter the following URL:
https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta_cgi/cgi

It should go through to the bakerlab, give an error message (perhaps so quick you don't even see it) and redirect you to the project homepage... but if you've got one of those things that limits what websites you can surf to, then it might come back and say "host not found" kinda thing. If that's the case, I would doubt you can download WUs anymore either :( and this would mean that it was just changed since the time you downloaded.

Have you tried going to the projects tab and clicking the "update" button? What messages result when you do that?

Redirect worked perfectly.

I'm guessing it has somethign to do with the system file permissions. I have it set up to run as a service since the user account I use on my computer isn't an admin.

I had to make a pile of files shared amongst users...any thoughts on setting BOINC up to run so that every user can adjust it?

fyi - I did a cold boot of my computer and here is what my message log says (after a manual update as well)

I now see there is an error 500 in there. Sometimes that means the server is too busy. And when the new Rosetta versions came out last week, they were pretty busy, but such an error is not typical, and obviously it's been happening to you repeatedly.

You've basically reached the end of my insight on this, someone else should be along soon to help you further. In the meantime, there are a number of things to review and test described here in the BOINC Wiki. Including the Windows firewall settings.

The fact that you successfully updated to the project, yet fail on the uploads is very odd to me.

I tried adjusting my MTU so it is set at a finite value but that hasn't worked for me either.

I'm downloading ethereal so I can monitor and figure out what the heck is going on!

According to my transfers they get to about 1k bytes and then bail. On a corporate ADSL connection so there shouldn't be any problem with a reliable network.

Still not able to upload my precious work units though :(

Please help!

That would be great thanks!

I'd really like this to work, I have 50 other computers in my work office that I'll set Rosetta up on if I can get this one to work.

Is there a way of manually uploading the completed work packages through a webpage or something?

Any progress on this matter?

I've switched to running UD's Protenome project which seems the same as this Rosetta one.

If they are different let me know and I'll continue to try and get BOINC to run on this work pc.

Jonathan, you might want to review the info. in this thread and if you still have problems, post your symptoms there.

Tony (mmciastro) has been active in that thread, and he seems to know the networking stuff very well.

Jonathan, open a command prompt window (start, all programs, accessories, command prompt). Type in:

ping boinc.bakerlab.org
hit enter. Does it succeed 100%?

then type in:

tracert boinc.bakerlab.org

hit enter, can you see the hops complete successfully?

Which version of Boinc are you using? Boinc 5.4.9 (now the recommended version) takes care of a Port issue. Are you using an http proxy? Socks proxy?

also Boinc uses the following ports, including 443 for HTTPS (secure communications while attaching, etc)

BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.

BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416.

BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages.

The "or" is Boinc version dependent.

also, boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe must have internet access in the firewall. boinc.scr must have access if you use the screensaver.

This must be the problem. The corporate firewall must be blocking the connection attempt from the server. I'll look into getting it opened....hopefully.

Cheers, and thanks for your help tony.

I'm more easily located in the Number Crunching fora if you need further assistance. This is my first time to the Q&A/P board.

To clarify, these ports are NOT used across the internet. So it is not your corporate firewall nor ISP that needs to allow these ports. It is just within your PC where the BOINC Manager is communicating with the client threads that do the crunching.

My understanding is that ALL communication over the internet is done via the same port (80, or maybe the secure port 443) that is used by browsers.

Tony, his download and crunch seemed to go fine. It's just the upload. So, he was able to hit the servers to get the download (i.e. route out to R@H). He was able to communicate to the crunching threads and complete the work (i.e. usage of poer 1043). How would the upload be any different in network terms?

Maybe the network has changed since the download was done. Have you downloaded any other WUs since having the upload problems?

Since you have a network of PCs you plan to install, it might be worth installing on another PC just to be sure it's nothing specific to this one.
